You wouldn't know by listening to the The Oberlin Pacific Quintet that the five musicians that make up the group are still just learning their craft. These jazz apprentices have the privilege of studying under some well tenured staff at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
The list includes Dan Wall, pianist who has performed with Steve Gadd, and Henry Mancini among others. Legendary jazz percussionist Billy Hart, who has performed with Herbie Hancock and Stan Getz, oversees the quintet. Then there's Jamey Haddad, world percussionist who tours with Paul Simon, and the list of staff accolades goes on. What a treat it must be to study under such knowledgeable musicians.
The Oberlin Pacific Quintet, or OPAQUE, as they are known, a few letters taken from each title word, has its roots in Los Osos. Drummer and Los Osos native Shawn Meyers first got his hands on the drums when he was 9 and his been playing ever since. He and his friends, most of who are freshman, are traveling back to the area for a few shows and will be stopping off at the Clubhouse as the featured act for the Songwriter Showcase on Tuesday July 13th.
They are joined by: Jeff Blanchard, Erin Inglish, Dusk Till Dawn, Housley Michael and others
