The Advocate The Student News Site of Forest Grove High School Thu, 20 Feb 2020 18:18:29 +0000 en-US hourly 1 How to Survive Valentine’s Day (Without a Date) Sat, 22 Feb 2020 18:03:53 +0000 As we all know and dread, Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. If you’re in a relationship, Valentine’s Day can be a fun way to celebrate your romantic partner and express your love! However, for anybody not currently in a relationship, Valentine’s Day may make you feel excluded, as our society tends to send the message that being in a romantic relationship is a must. In the end, however, Valentine’s Day is for everyone, and with a few simple steps, you can always survive it!

The first step to surviving Valentine’s Day is purchasing a gas mask! A good gas mask can substantially improve your ability to breathe through the cloud of heavy perfume and Axe Body Spray that hovers throughout the halls each year (You can find a few good options here: The real first step is simply to practice some self-love! Loving yourself is a pretty important step to surviving, you have to put your oxygen mask on before you help others put on theirs! Basically, if you don’t take care of and love yourself first, you won’t be able to; a) survive Valentine’s Day, and b) love others!

Now that we’ve established self-love is a must, let’s go over just how to practice self-love, and in turn, survive Valentine’s Day. Well, try taking Valentine’s Day for yourself this year. Spend some time appreciating what makes you, you. Go for a walk in the park, buy yourself some chocolates and a new stuffed animal, or take yourself on a date at a nice restaurant.

If you’re not feeling the love in taking an entire day for yourself, that’s okay too! There are plenty of other options! One quick, easy, and cheap option is to simply write yourself a few love letters! What I mean by this is to simply set aside a pretty box, and every day up until Valentine’s Day write yourself a love letter describing why you’re amazing and put it in the box! Then, when Valentine’s Day rolls around, open your box, and read all of your self-love letters! You could even keep your self-love letter box for multiple years and have a constant reminder of how perfect you are! If you would like some more easy ideas, check out this list made by Jessie Hays; 30 Ways To Practice Self-Love.

All in all, our culture surrounding Valentine’s Day is clearly overly focused on romantic relationships. In fact, our culture is so focused that surviving the holiday each year feels near impossible! The task of survival may always seem daunting, but you will be able to consistently make it through with just a little self care.

Coronavirus Sat, 22 Feb 2020 18:03:37 +0000 At this point, most people have heard of the coronavirus. You may have heard of it on the news, seen someone post about it, or even seen the memes about it. Most people are still pretty unsure as to what the coronavirus is. Basically it is any sort of RNA (ribonucleic acid, present in all living cells) that causes a disease to both humans and animals.

There are many different types of coronaviruses but the one that has been spreading lately is nCov. nCov is a respiratory disease that was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. This isn’t the first time that we have had an outburst of the coronavirus. Back in 2002 through 2003, there was a huge outburst of a coronavirus that was called SARS (a severe acute respiratory virus) that also began in China. But unlike the coronavirus we are dealing with at the moment, SARS wasn’t as severe with only around 349 deaths in the span of two years. As of February 4th, 2020 China has over 425 confirmed deaths due to the coronavirus, and more than 7,700 cases around the world. This is a huge issue that, and people are beginning to worry that they or someone they know will become infected.

Although the virus was first introduced in some areas in China, it has since spread throughout different parts of the world. This is because of the fast-spreading of diseases, as well as the fact that people infected in China could have accidentally spread elsewhere through traveling. Because of those two factors, the coronavirus has spread in various places throughout the world. It even infected a woman from Forest Grove that had been on vacation on a cruise off the coast of Japan. Although she has been reported to be doing okay, she is required to stay in a Japanese hospital for two weeks just as a precaution. As for the other 70 people that had been on the cruise, they are required to stay aboard the cruise ship as a safety precaution, due to the fact that 60 of these passengers have also been tested for being infected with the virus.

Most scientists believe the virus most likely originated from an animal source, but somehow managed to begin spreading to people. There are many ways to help protect yourself from this untreatable disease, for example, if you know for a fact that someone has the virus do not come in close contact with them. Also avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Make sure to also cover your coughing and sneezing with a tissue, and then make sure that tissue ends up in the garbage, you definitely do not want to be the cause of the virus throughout the school. If you are not sure if you or someone you know has the virus, some of the symptoms include lots of coughing, high fevers, and shortness of breath. If you have these symptoms, make sure to check in with a doctor just to be sure. And if you do get infected, stay home and avoid travel at all costs.

The Foodies Journal: Pancakes and Shrove Tuesday Sat, 22 Feb 2020 18:02:50 +0000 Happy National Pancake Day, Vikings!  This February 25th will be National Pancake Day, a day to enjoy fluffy delicious pancakes with syrup and reflect on how truly long these fried flat pieces of bread have been in our diets.

For 30,000 years, we have made pancakes, mixing and frying the batter on hot rocks in our early stages of living to present day where we fry the batter on stovetops in pans to create flat cakes.  One of our oldest signs of these flat cakes was found in the remains of Otzi the Iceman.  He was found in 1991 in the Italian Alps, providing scientists more information on what residents in the Neolithic age ate. His last meal consisted of red deer meat, ibex meat, and grounded einkorn wheat with bits of charcoal, suggesting to scientists that what he ate was some form of a pancake. In ancient Greece and Rome, ingredients to create pancakes consisted of wheat flour, olive oil, honey, and curdled milk. However, during the English Renaissance, they ate pancakes with spices like rosewater, sherry, and apples to add more flavor to their flat cakes.  However, the actual use of the name “Pancakes” hadn’t begun until the 15th century and they were called other things instead. Some of these other names were “Indian Cakes”, “Hoecakes”, “Johnny Cakes”, “Journey Cakes”, Buckwheat Cakes”, “Griddle Cakes”, and “Flap Jacks”.

In Early America, pancakes were made of buckwheat and cornmeal, which was especially loved by the American president Thomas Jefferson, who loved the pancakes so much he ended up sending a special recipe all the way to his hometown Shadwell, Virginia! The first American cookbook that we know of that had some pancake recipes in it was in Amelia Simmons “American Cookery” published in 1796.  The first two recipes in the book for pancakes were called, “Johnny Cakes”, or “Hoecakes” which called for milk, Indian Meal, and molasses. The second recipe was called “Indian Slapjacks”, this dropped the milk but added four eggs.

We all know the saying “flat like a pancake”, which has existed since around 1611, negatively referring to flat-chested women or for better circumstances flat terrain like Poland or the Canadian Glaciers.  In 2003, this recurring use of the catchphrase led three geographers with a curious sense of humor to travel across Midwest America to find the relative flatness of pancakes compared to that of Kansas. Getting a pancake from the International House of Pancakes, IHOP, they used a digital imaging processing system and a confocal laser microscope, and some similar profile of Kansas from the United States Geological Survey, to find the hilarious results that even though pancakes are rather flat, Kansas is flatter!  As National Geographic quotes, “Where, mathematically, a value of 1.000 indicates perfect tabletop flatness, Kansas scored a practically horizontal 0.9997. The pancake, in contrast, scored a relatively lumpy 0.957.”. However, in Kansas’s defense, there are actually multiple states in America that are flatter than a pancake including, Florida the flattest one followed by Illinois, North Dakota, Louisiana, Minnesota, and Delaware.

Now that we have concluded that pancakes may not be all that flat knowing that multiple states are even flatter, we can begin to wonder how Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday) began.  In the earlier days, Pancake Day was a day to celebrate and feast before the beginning of Lent, a Holy event that lasts for six weeks where Christians fast, pray, and attempt to reconnect with their God.  Before Lent Day, Christians would make many delicious meals that are made with almost spoiled food so they wouldn’t go to waste, such as eggs, milk, and butter, many of these dishes had a  pancake-like look.  However, we aren’t in these kinds of times anymore when we must get rid of almost spoiled foods, because we have fridges and ways to keep food fresh, so we celebrate Pancake Day through other things! In  London Pancake Day is taken on on a huge scale. Big restaurants going mad to make as many pancakes as possible and adding toppings to catch the eye of tourists or anyone to get money. Another event for Pancake Day is pancake races where you must walk at a fast pace relativity and flip a pancake all the way to the end without stopping.

Pancakes have been an amazingly delicious, and easy dish to cook for years and years!  Shrove Tuesday has also given us a good time to connect with others and just have genuine fun.  So without further ado, I wish you all an amazing Pancake Day.

Counseling at FGHS Sat, 22 Feb 2020 18:02:44 +0000 Many students have complained about how the counselors in FGHS don’t have enough time to be attending to students. The counselors are very busy every day dealing with different things like meetings and talking to students’ parents. The counselors are people who try to be there for their students when they have problems and are there for moral support. Talking to your counselor and getting to know them helps in the process of making a relationship with them. Sometimes students don’t feel comfortable when having to share certain information with others or the school counselors because they feel that they can’t be trusted but that’s not true. Counselors in FGHS try hard to build relationships with students because it’s the right way to find a solution to any problems you might have.

The fact that the counselors have a busy schedule shouldn’t stop you from trying to make an appointment with them when you have a problem. Their job is to be there for you and to help you succeed in your daily life in and out of school. This helps you see how much they truly care about you and any problems you might have outside of school. They always try to get back to students and try to take in as many students as they can because they are concerned for you and genuinely care about how you feel overall. Counselors help you see things in a new way. When you have a problem they tend to give you options on how you need to handle a situation. Counselors are great people to talk to when you have problems, when you’re sad or even when you’re happy.

Building relationships with your counselor is very important because they have to get to know you in order to help you solve your issues.  Sometimes students tend to have short responses because of the fact that they don’t have a relationship with their counselor and that makes a really big difference. If the counselor doesn’t know you then they won’t know what would be a better approach for you to take when dealing with an issue. Counselors give you a therapeutic approach when dealing with stress, anger, or sadness. They sometimes help you put your life on track by giving great advice and helping you find the missing pieces that you needed to feel better. They help you figure out what you need to do in order to not be stressed or angry. They try to help you in every way they can to make you less stressed and instead, more happy. They enjoy when they feel trusted instead of being seen as a stranger. They try to be as close as possible to you so they can help you build a plan for you to solve your problem.

Not everyone needs counseling but that doesn’t mean that you should cross it out when you have an issue because sometimes it can be your answer. Sometimes you leave the counselor’s office feeling better or feeling not so great but that doesn’t mean that you are leaving without a plan. You will always find comfort and will be at ease after you have figured what your next step will be taking because won’t be clueless. Trust needs to be built and after that your life will be easier and will learn to appreciate everything they do. Don’t shut counselors out because sometimes that will be something that could change your life.

Food and Eating Habits of the Germans Sat, 22 Feb 2020 18:02:35 +0000 Germans are known for their traditional food around the world. What many people don’t know is the fact that German food is so much more than sausage or Sauerkraut. Depending on where in Germany you stay, you will find a big variety of traditional food. Of course, you can also find food from different countries and some traditional German food you can find german wide.

The southern region shares many specialties that reach over to Austria or Switzerland. To give an example Kässpätzle, also called Käsknöpfle or Kässpatzn, is hot spätzle with grated granular cheese, usually Emmental cheese. Another specialty is Kaiserschmarrn, a light, caramelized pancake. According to a legend, the empress Sissi had to stay in a certain thin figure and only ate less Schmarrn, whereupon the emperor said, “Give me this Schmarrn that our Leopold has cooked again.” A typical Bavarian specialty is Weißwurst, a sausage with a mild taste and a firm, bouncy bite. Their history goes back to the 1800s. Weißwürste are usually handed out in pairs, along with a Bretzl, a dollop of sweet mustard, and a glass of Weizenbier (wheat beer).

In the Northern states, seafood abounds, but there are also famous meat dishes like Koenigsberger Klopse, which are meatballs in white sauce. It began as a specialty from the once long-standing Prussian Empire 200 years ago and counts to one of the most famous German dishes. Another dish more known in the northern part of Germany is Gruenkohl with Pinkel, a combination of kale and a variety of sausages and/or meat. It is often served with Pinkel, which is smoked Kaszanka, a type of sausage.

Some traditional food got so famous that everybody in Germany knows them, for example, Döner. Modern fast food was invented by a Turkish immigrant in 1971 in Berlin. However, Döner is made of meat, lettuce, tomato, onions, and cucumber. Another also pretty famous sausage is Currywurst. Currywurst, a sausage, typically cut in bite-sized chunks and served with curry ketchup, itself topped with curry powder, was invented after the second world war in Berlin.

Moreover, soups play an important role in the German menu. Light soups as a starter, or hearty soups and stews as the main dish. Also, an important role in German cuisine is salads. Light salads like lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers often accompany a meat dish. But Germans also have filling salads such as noodle salad, potato salad, and dumpling salad. A must-have of every full menu is a dessert. It can be a cake, cupcakes, pudding or just something little.

Following this German advice “Eat breakfast like an emperor, lunch like a king and dinner like a beggar,” it would be healthier for yourself, although it is hardly manageable in real life.

In real life, people have only a light breakfast. Cereals, a slice of bread with jam, cheese or cold cuts. Students and people at work often have the chance for a quick snack around 10 am. But it is mostly different on weekends or holidays. Full breakfast at hotels, and home, includes bread rolls, toast, sausages and cold cuts, cheese, boiled and fried eggs, muesli, and cereals. For lunch, most people love to have their main meal of the day at lunchtime! A traditional German Mittagessen consists of a light soup, meat, vegetables and potatoes or rice as the main course, and a delicious dessert. At many restaurants, you’ll find the “Stammessen” or “Tagesgericht” on the menu at lunchtime. This is a three-course meal at a special price that changes daily. “Kaffee” is a break sometime between lunch and dinner, to enjoy a cup of coffee and a piece of cake, or cookies. In these busy times, we won’t have a “Kaffee break” during the week, especially not while at work or school. However, on Sundays and public holidays, having “Kaffee” is still an important tradition. For birthdays and other celebrations, or just hanging out with friends or family, you are often invited “Zum Kaffee”. The traditional German dinner consists of bread or toast, cold cuts, cheese, salads, pickled vegetables, canned fish, or even leftovers from lunch. However, many Germans have a warm meal for dinner, especially when they don’t have a warm meal for lunch. In restaurants, you find a wide range of cold specialties like Wurstsalat, cheese varieties, sausages and more. There is often a separate menu called “Brotzeitkarte”. Items on these menus are also available during the day.

In conclusion, there are many great German specialties, you should try if you get the opportunity. Food as well as habits change over the years and depending on where you live and how and where you grew up, you probably have different cuisine.

Guten Appetit!

Upcoming Albums in 2020 Sat, 22 Feb 2020 18:02:08 +0000   2019 was filled with amazing artists that expressed their points of view, emotions, and beliefs through their music. It was a year of great new music. I think we can all agree it was highly enjoyable and was a great way to end the decade. Now, 2020 is going to be another great year for music and artists. Artists that have not released new albums in years are now under the spotlight for their upcoming releases.

One major artist coming out with a new album this year is the one and only; Alicia Key. Key’s had previously taken a break from music to focus on herself and her two kids. She hasn’t released any new albums since her 2016 HERE album but she has been active in the media. As many know, she hosted the Grammy Awards for a second time this year and she has won 15 Grammys. She recently had an interview with Billboard where she announced her upcoming album ALICIA. This project is set to be released on the 20th of March 2020.

Justin Bieber is also set to release new music this month. The very well known artist hasn’t released an album since 2015. His last album named Purpose was well received by many but like any other artist, criticism was a huge part of the release process. This new album isn’t any different. Many of his fans support him but once he released one song that is featured in his new album, criticism began to overwhelm his social media. Justin Bieber’s new album, Changes, is set to be released on February 16, 2020.

Besides Alicia and JB, an artist that goes by Lauv is also releasing new music. Ari Staprans Leff (his full name) got his breakthrough hit in 2017. I like me better was featured in the hit teen rom-com “To all the boys I’ve loved” before, which jump-started his singing career further and brighter. His new album will be available after March 6, 2020. Lauv has already let fans get a taste of new the album by releasing songs such as Feelings, I’m So Tired, and Changes. These songs were very well received by many which lead people to be excited about this new project.

Just like Lauv, Dua Lipa also had her artist breakthrough in 2017. Her hit single New Rules brought many new intriguing fans to listen to her music. This song empowered many people to not be caught up with their past relationship and to move on in a healthy and mature way. Since then, she has become a very well known pop artist with many fans. On April 3rd, 2020, Dua Lipa will release her album Future Nostalgia which will follow with a European tour, she announced.

2020 will also be a year for Latin music. A known bachata artist, Prince Royce (Geoffrey Royce Rojas) will be releasing his new album this year. He has been very lowkey these past few years but he announced his new album, Alter Ego on this Instagram. Royce hasn’t released a full album since his 2017 album, FIVE. Alter Ego will feature 23 songs, which is an abnormal length but hey, nobody is complaining. Other Hispanic artists will be featured in this project which makes it 10 times better. Geoffrey has released sneak peeks of his album by releasing some songs such as Morir Solo, Adicto, and Curame in 2019.

Overall, there are many more artists that have upcoming projects on the works. They work hard and put a lot of dedication which is all appreciated by their fans and audiences. 2020 will be a great year for the music industry.

Blue and Green Sat, 22 Feb 2020 18:02:02 +0000 Two colors, but an array of patterns in the way that you look at me. It felt like a dream, a dream of blue and green colored skies, smiles with no lies. You have seen so many days and so many nights, but you have never seen anything more bright than your own eyes. When I had first met you in middle school, your smile and your eyes made me nervous, because you had looked so perfect. Those two colors may only ever be colors to you, just as simple as blue but to me, they’ve always been the brightest thing I have seen, because they have more detail than just green. Looking at you there are a million reasons to believe, you are more than just a dream. Life with you in it has been more than two colors, it’s been a movie scene, a movie dream. When things go dark tonight we look at the sky, hoping the sun will rise in the morning, but when it goes dark tonight I’ll wish for you to be alright. Only in the day time do people acknowledge other people, when the sun is bright and everything is fine, but when the sun falls down, no one is around.

My mind wanders to happy places in the night time, I remember your eyes and the smile I fell in love with and sometimes it’s so simple to find peace when you found another piece. Whenever you are with me it’s a happy feeling, a wholeness feeling with no one else, you know my emotional healing. Falling into your eyes still brings me a smile, knowing you’ll be here for a while. The winds may blow us off course, but I have your back for sure, blue and green nights with mornings of surprise, but it isn’t a surprise you’re mine. As the day goes on and time flies, I still continue to fall for those eyes. A million colors, but the color that you have is a color I adore. Color can be simplistic for some people, but when it comes to you, the color goes beyond just blue and green. You light up my skies with those eyes, you bring sunsets and sunrises so many more colors to see, you make me believe in my dreams. My dreams that have been seen in the notebooks in my mind, the ones I always hide.

Believing in those dreams in a different light is something you showed me. From the beginning until the end, you will always be my best friend because the love I have for you is undeniable and doesn’t end. The roads we crossed taught me to forgive and to see more colors than just black and white, you’ve shown me a new sight within this new light that everything will be alright as long as we tried. Saying that I love your eyes goes deeper than just those two colors, it exceeds the fact that you’re my other.

The Road to Super Bowl 54: The Kansas City Chiefs Sat, 22 Feb 2020 18:01:49 +0000 Anyone who watched the Super Bowl from start to end, or stayed updated knows that the Chiefs won 31-20. Although this is a huge accomplishment for the Chiefs, there was more to their season that challenged them mentally and physically. The Chiefs had to deal with tough games that made it hard to get to Super Bowl 54.

Tough Games:

The Kansas City Chiefs had a great start to the NFL season with a 4-0 record (meaning they as a team have not lost a game yet). In Week 5, the Chiefs had a home game in Arrowhead Stadium against the Indianapolis Colts. They lost the game 19-13 and attained their first loss. What made this loss a really hard loss was that this game was a home game, and they lost to a team with a 2-2 record.

The next week, (Week 6) the Kansas City Chiefs were hosting another home game in Arrowhead Stadium against the Texans. The Chiefs were down at the half 17-23 and it didn’t help them in that they had a 17-3 lead at the end of the first quarter (meaning their defense gave up 20 points in the second quarter while the offense wasn’t getting any points). The game ended in a Houston Texans win 31-24. There is more to it than this single game with the Texans. The Chiefs ended up getting a bye week (one week off during first round playoff games) because they were the 2nd seed (Baltimore Ravens were the number 1 seed). After their bye week, they had to play the winner of the NFL Wildcard Round, which the Texans had won against the Bills 22-19 in overtime. This game between the Texans and the Chiefs determined which team got to go to the AFC Championship Round (The game before advancing to the Super Bowl). The Texans had a score quickly mentality and had the Chiefs right where they wanted them at the end of the first quarter 24-0. In the second quarter, Patrick Mahomes (The Chiefs Quarterback) pulled off a Mahomes Maricle and got the Chiefs up 28-24 at the half. After the half, the Chiefs only allowed three points on defense and won 51-31 which is arguably the best comeback playoff game in history.

During the season in Week 8, the Kansas City Chiefs were hosting another game at home in Arrowhead Stadium against the Green Bay Packers. Going into the game, the Packers were 6-1 and the Chiefs were 5-2. The game was very close, but the Packers won 31-24. The Chiefs had a lower chance of winning going into the game and this was a hard loss considering how close playoff season was getting to.

The following week, (Week 9) the Kansas City Chiefs were on the road to Nissan Stadium to face the Tennessee Titans. At halftime, the score was 13-13. When the third quarter had ended, the chiefs had pulled out ahead 22-20. The Titans needed to out score the Chiefs in the fourth quarter by at least three (assuming the Chiefs aren’t able to score in the fourth quarter). The Titans pulled off that idea as they got 15 points in the fourth and the Chiefs got 10 points. These events led to the final score of 35-32 Titans. This game not only meant that the Chiefs lost, but they lost on the road for the first time all season long. This game was not the last we would see between the Chiefs and the Titans however. The Titans somehow were able to beat the number one seeded AFC team the Baltimore Ravens with a stunning blowout of a score of 28-12 and got to advance on to meet the Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium. At the half, the Chiefs were beating the Titans 21-17. After the half, the third quarter was a stalemate between the teams as neither side could attain any points. With a score 21-17 Chiefs beginning the fourth quarter, the Chiefs were able to put 14 more points on the board and only gave up 7 points to the Titans leading to a revenge victory of 35-24 Kansas City Chiefs.

Society Has Deemed Boys Be Raised a Certain Way Sat, 22 Feb 2020 18:01:45 +0000 Our society has a lot of issues that sit on us until we can’t breathe anymore. And while most of these societal issues need to be talked about, desperately at this point, I believe that the way people are raised is an important issue, that will affect them and impact them for the rest of their lives. The issue I want to talk about in a nutshell, is that boys are raised in a way that cuts them off from being in touch with their emotions and being compassionate and empathetic. This also  cuts them off from getting valuable experiences that could possibly help them in the real world. What I’m trying to say is that most men are emotionally inept and the cause of this, is the way that society has judged them and told people to raise their children. Specifically males.

An in-depth answer to the questions that may be out there is that while women and girls are raised to feel inferior physically, but not mentally, boys are raised to feel inferior in any way that has to do with learning, growing and feeling emotions. Society has made it to where boys who show they are smart are labeled as nerds or geeks. Boys that allow their feelings to show and be present are labeled as wimps or weak. The “ideal man” is someone who isn’t in touch with their feelings and is smart but doesn’t live up to their real potential and are raised to judge the people that are being the true versions of themselves. They are raised in a home that may have either made them feel insecure about themselves emotionally, so they lash out and hurt people in order to make people feel the same thing as they did.

Another thing that completely ruins boys as they grow is that they believe that they should be and act a certain way. Bright colors and nail polish and listening to music that has been deemed music for girls or little kids is strange and not meant to be a thing. It’s a big no no, actually. And that block is what causes men to judge and attack people that are attempting to grow up the way they believe they are… human. And it’s odd to see that part of society because we throw ourselves into this cycle of hating people and the things that they do because we believe it’ll change things. We attack so hard that the things on the inside that make us human change us into something just a little more not human. How sad is that? Living for something that doesn’t fill your cup isn’t how you should have to live. Live for the things and places and people that make you happy. My family raised me to feel what I feel. They raised all of us children to feel what we feel. And I believe that when someone is raised that way, they will go on to raise their children that way. Feel what you feel, do what you want as long as it’s not harmful to you or someone else. Keep moving humans, you got this.

Valentine’s Day: Best and Worst Gifts Sat, 22 Feb 2020 18:01:38 +0000 Valentine’s Day just passed and the gifts were either the best or the worst. Here’s a list telling you exactly what those were, starting with the best.

  1. Food or chocolate

Receiving chocolate is one the most popular gifts during valentines day, and not many people have an issue with this as it’s delicious with how many types and flavors there are. If you wanna go to the next level of chocolate, you can get those $20 boxes or even make an edible arrangement with fruit, at home to make it extra special. There’s also food you can get for your partner and can be as simple as their favorite snacks or even get them a very fancy dinner.

  1. Spending the day or night with your partner

If gifts aren’t your thing or your partners, spending the day doing a favorite activity like baking, watching movies, having dinner, or even star gazing is a great replacement and you can do all of these without worrying about money. Spending the day with your partner also lets you have time alone to bond and continue to get to know each other better.

  1. Homemade Gifts

Homemade things are such adorable and amazing gifts because you know that the person who made them took time out of their day to make something with their own hands instead of going out to the store and buying you something so many  people already have. Also, you have no limitations or borders when it comes to making something homemade because it’s always gonna make different and unique than to what any other store bought gift looks like. You can make things related to food, clothing, accessories, drawings, a letter, anything you can imagine! In the end, homemade gifts are always gonna be extra special knowing you put extra love and thought into them.

  1. Meaningful Gift

Meaningful gifts and homemade gifts might have the similarity that they both come with extra love but meaningful gifts is kind of like the category and homemade gifts is the subtopic. Meaningful gifts can range from a simple and handwritten card to your loved one to even a gift they’ve always wanted or talked about. With that being said, size doesn’t matter at all for meaningful gifts because it’s the meaning behind it that counts, not the size.

  1. Flowers

Some people will say flowers are tacky and last minute gifts but in reality, they’re beautiful, smell good, and have so much meaning to them when you actually take time to look into them. Flowers have so many meanings to them and that’s what makes them so special. Flowers, like I stated before, are beautiful and make great decorations for your room or any other room.

  1. Household Items

Household items like blankets, clothing, perfumes, plushies and more items like those are great for presents when you know what they need. Household items are such comfortable gifts too because of how homey they are. You also can’t really go wrong with household items because they are so simple and you won’t have to tend to them like you would with flowers.

  1. A Store Bought Card

Don’t get me wrong, store bought cards are perfectly fine if you actually write something in it. If you give your partner a card without actually writing anything in it, it tells your partner that you put no meaning and time into it. You want to show your partner that you care and writing them a message in a card really shows that.

  1. Gross Valentine Candy

People love receiving sweets for Valentines Day but a lot of people do not like those tacky, cheap, and gross Valentines Day candy. Yes, i’m talking about the candy hearts in the little cardboard boxes. They are also a bit childish, so stick to the chocolate next time.

  1. Finding out your crush…

Asked someone else out, or gave someone else a valentine’s day gift is completely heartbreaking. You hoped and wished it was you but in the end it wasn’t and that’s one of the worst gifts you can get. Better luck next time.

  1. Gifts With No Meaning

Receiving a huge expensive gift might be fancy but it has no meaning which makes it less than the rest. For example, you decide to get your partner a new phone although they didn’t need one, it might be a great gift but in the end it has no meaning and isn’t sentimental.

  1. Forgetting/Nothing

It’s Valentine’s Day, you wake up with no valentines day text, then think nothing of it, you go and see your partner and they say nothing about Valentines Day. They completely forgot. Now that’s gotta hurt. It really shows that it was never a big deal to your partner and they most likely didn’t even think about it.

  1. A breakup text

The worst gift is a breakup text. Especially when there’s no reason behind it, for example, “I don’t think this is working out, sorry.”
